Don Bosco Anbu Illam celebrated its 32nd Annual Day on 13 August 2017 at Bosco Illam, MKB Nagar, Chennai. The event also marked the 10th anniversary of Bosco Illam – A Shelter Home for Boys and Inauguration of Saranalayam – A New Shelter Home for Girls. Rev. Fr. Gregory Devarajan SDB, former director of DBAI presided over the function.

During the event, the annual report was released and the website of Anbu Illam was relaunched. Music director Srikanth Deva and ‘Konjam Nadinga Boss’ fame Mr. Adhavan gave guest performances. Former directors of DBAI and DCPO of Chennai Mr. Shiva Jeyakumar gave away the prizes for children. More than 350 children participated in this event that was well coordinated by Rev. Fr. Joseph Leo, the director.

• Don Bosco Anbu Illam Saranalayam

Don Bosco Anbu Illam – Saranalayam (A New Children’s Home for Vulnerable Girls) was blessed and inaugurated on 24 August, 2017 by Rev. Fr. K.M. Jose, SDB (Salesian Provincial of Chennai Province), in the presence of Mr. Senthil (District Child Protection Officer, Tiruvallur), Rev. Sr. Josephine, SMA (Mother General of SMA Congregation) and former directors of DBAI at Pope John’s Garden, Madavaram, Chennai.

In a short cultural programme that followed the inauguration, Children staged their events and Rev. Fr. Joseph Leo, SDB, Rector, and Director of DBAI, thanked everyone who was instrumental in the construction of Saranalayam. More than 250 children and other invitees and guests participated in the event.

• Jeevodaya Hospice

During the quarterly vacation, Mr.Ashok and Br.Arul Prasanth led, 18 new recruits of Bosco illam Scout troop had a short scouting experience in Jeevodaya Hospice, Madavaram between 30 September to 02 October 2017.

The camp was inaugurated by Mr. Shanmuga Sundaram, Inspector of Police, Madavaram Milk Colony (MMC), in the presence of Fr. Joseph Leo, DBAI Director. During the day camp, the budding scouts learned the basics of scouting, spent the time to interact with the sick and the aged and performed programmes for them in addition to regular scouting activities.

• Local bus stand at Broadway

DBAI collaborated with Greater Chennai Corporation together with its sister NGO’s to raise awareness on ‘World Homeless Day’ observed internationally on 10 October 2017.

Local bus stand at Broadway was chosen to create awareness on the theme. Pamphlets carrying information on the theme were issued to the general public and they were explained to them over the microphone. Traditional art form like ‘thappatam’ was used, to draw the attention and to leave behind a message. DBAI childline unit made use of this platform to raise awareness on Childline (1098). More than 1100 general public were reached out through this one day programme.

The HCL foundation conducted Science exhibition titled, “Young Kalam Science fest” at Vivekananda Auditorium, Anna University, Guindy, Chennai on 26 October 2017 with the aim of encouraging children to develop an inquisitive mind, to hone creativity and develop a keen interest in science and technology.

The displays ranged from save water, save energy, recycling, health, environment, energy, and innovation. More than 150 students participated in the event and around 80 scientific models were exhibited. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s grand nephew Mr. APJ Sheik Dawood was the chief guest along with Dr. Viswanathan, Vice-Chancellor of Anna University and Ms. Nidhi Pundir, Director – CSR Head HCL Foundation. 6 HCL gurukul clubs from Don Bosco Anbu Illam participated in the event and bagged many prizes.

DON BOSCO ANBU ILLAM- HCL FOUNDATION SCOUTS AND GUIDES organized Awareness Rally on World NO-TOBACCO DAY” at J11 Kannagi Nagar Police Boys and Girls Club. Scout Children from Various Police Boys and Girls Clubs Participated in the Rally. The chief guest for the day Mr.Bala Murali,Inspector flagged off the rally. Other Guests Mr. Sreeram, Volunteer HCLF and Mr. Antony Gunaraj, Assistant Secretary, Don Bosco District Scouts participated in the programme. Fr. James, Administrator of DBAI presided over the event.’

Don Bosco Anbu Illam-ICSC organized வெயிலோடு விளையாடி in the month of May. It officially came to an end in the august presence of Ms.Isabella, Member, Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Executive Director – Madras Christian Council of Social Service, Chennai whom in her presidential address touched upon Child Rights and Child Trafficking, an awareness movie titled ‘Kadathal’ was screened which projected the current situations for girl child. Around 400 children participated in this event.

DBAI-HCLF organized Investiture Ceremony for our Scouts and Guides 2 days camp at Tonakela Campsite, Annanur on 15 &.16, March 2019. Around 60 Children were Participated the Scout Camp. The Investiture Ceremony was guided by Mr.Antony Guna Sekar, Vice-Secretary of Don Bosco District. Chief Guest for the day Mrs.Porkodi, Inspector of Police,T1 Ambathur Police Station. Fr.Joseph Leo, Director of DBAI and Mr.Newton, HCLF presided over the programme. Fr. Joseph Leo and Mrs.Porkodi distributed Neckerchief to all the children. Mr.Ashok Bosco, Scout Master distributed badges to the Children.

DBAI-Shelter for Homeless gave an awareness about Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Shelter for Homeless (Night Shelter) to Social Work studentsof Mar Gregorios College on 12 February, 2019. More than 60 students participated in the program. We also distributed the pamphlets about GCC with shelter details of Chennai Zone.
